Comparing diamonds of different hue

Brownish and greenish diamonds whose color suffusion is not sufficiently intense for them to be rated as fancy colors can likewise be compared with the yellow series. The grader should attempt to ignore the actual hue of the color and to classify the stone solely according to the degree of its color saturation in the yellow series.

For this, brown is more readily and more intensely perceived as a darker tone of color than yellow or even green. There is a tendency therefore to assign lower grades to brown tinted diamonds at first sight.
