Comparing diamonds of different size

When diamonds of different sizes are compared, the difference in size can make grading more difficult because the larger stone shows the color saturation more clearly. Beginners particularly tend to rate the color lower because it is "apparently" more clearly visible. The effect of the more intense color impact can be lessened by judging only the upper third of the pavilion of the stone in color comparison (Fig 5).

The Colour is most easily discernable at the point of the stone Here, too, breathing on the stone is to be recommended, for it eliminates the larger reflecting surfaces of the large stone.
